It was hard to avoid the impression that Mr Miliband has never been much interested in music. Still, since he’d been invited on to this important programme, he’d gamely cobbled something together. His selections, like his justifications for them, were largely banal: Jerusalem (“My parents loved this country”), Take on Me by A-ha (“I remember going to the school disco”), Angels (it reminds him of his wife, who is “an amazing person. I feel blessed and lucky”). Kirsty listened to him singing along as she played Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. “You’re right,” she said, “you’re not musical.”
